Colloquium – Dismantling Structural Racism in the Foster Care & Juvenile Delinquency Systems: Homes, Not Institutions – Justice for the Next Generation

On Thursday, August 4, 2011, RJI will present its’ newest colloquium at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The colloquium will distill existing knowledge to set forth a clear, comprehensive statement of best practices and alternatives to out-of-home placement in the foster care system and juvenile delinquency systems. It will highlight legal mandates that require prevention and prompt reunification efforts, and will present the Racial Justice Initiative of TimeBanks USA’s unique approach. On Thursday, November 18, 2010, the Racial Justice Initiative of TimeBanks USA presented a framework for combatting racial disparities through a novel legal theory of “deliberate indifference” that is designed to stimulate system reform.

Teleconference to Discuss Legal & Systems Change Strategy
The TimeBanks USA Racial Justice Initiative team held a teleconference on July 22, 2009 to discuss the legal and systems change strategy advanced in the article, An Offer They Can’t Refuse: Racial Disparity in Juvenile Justice and Deliberate Indifference Meet Alternatives that Work. Over 50 thought leaders, advocates, and administrators from around the country participated in the call.
